Fruit in the Fridge

Ok maybe I’m a produce dummy, but just in case there are other dummies out there, I wanted to help you not feel alone. Until a couple of months ago, here is what I did with my produce I bought from the big box store; put it in the fridge in the plastic bag. Rinse it off with a dash of water from the sink. Eat it. Throw away the quarter of it that went bad because I forgot I had it. Smart huh?

I started shopping at a farmers’ market at the beginning of the year, and I saw a fruit and vegetable spray they sold, but still felt pretty safe in my “method.” Once the Itty Bitty started eating off of our plates, I started getting a little more vigorous in my washing. Then a few weeks ago, I started soaking all the produce whose skin is eaten in a bowl of water with a few tablespoons of vinegar and dash of lemon juice. It helped the shelf life marginally, but we were still throwing away produce that never got eaten.

So I decided to just put a bowl of fruit at eye level in the fridge. Such a simple, yet effective, solution to my forgotten fruit problem! It’s all washed and ready to be eaten at a moment’s notice, so there is absolutely NO reason for me to grab anything else for a snack because now it’s the easiest food to access. I seriously cannot believe that I never thought of this before. If you have been doing this for years, great! Now go tell some of your friends because some of them might be dummies like me.
